Ajar ("we", "our", or "us") is deeply committed to protecting your privacy and keeping your data entirely in your own hands. We built Ajar to help you stop food waste—not to collect or sell your personal information.
Ajar is a fundamentally offline-first application. All of your core data—including what jars you have, what you've binned, your images, and your efficiency statistics—is stored locally on your device using Apple's secure SwiftData framework. We do not have user accounts, we do not have a backend server, and we do not upload your personal data to any external cloud database.
In order to provide specific core features, Ajar communicates securely with two third-party APIs:
Ajar requires access to your device's Camera to scan barcodes, read expiration dates via optical character recognition (OCR), and take photos of items. The camera feed is processed entirely on-device using Apple's Vision framework. We do not record or transmit your camera feed or photos to any external servers.
If you opt-in to Push Notifications, Ajar schedules local reminders on your device to notify you before an item expires. These notifications are generated locally by your iPhone—we do not send them remotely.
